In 1999, two Black women decided they would not be victims, but rather help others become victors. HIV-positive and living in Liberty City, they noted the need for an agency that could serve the community in a culturally-relevant way. Empower “U”, Inc., a minority, peer-based, 501(c)3 not-for-profit was born, is thriving, and growing strong here in Liberty City.
Today, Empower U has an expert and dedicated team of doctors, staff and executive leadership who compassionately serve in the trenches of the community. Located within Liberty City, the center has strong ties and deep relationships with residents near and abroad.
Empower U has grown from doing street outreach to bringing HIV/AIDS awareness to underserved communities and in 2013 becoming a federally qualified health center to provide primary medical and related HIV specialty care.
Empower “U” maintains its mission to empower, educate, and promote better health care choices among historically underserved minority communities disproportionately impacted by health disparities.
Its vision is equal access to health care and provision of quality services to mitigate health disparities among historically minority communities. More than a job, Empower U is on a journey to improve holistic health among its patients because healthy people create healthy communities.
